On the first day, we shared lunch with a group of staff members from Silver Lining Ministry’s Nanning headquarters. As we got to know one another and exchanged stories, we learned that some of the staff had once been orphans who grew up under the care of Silver Lining Ministry. They had also received support from the ministry to complete their university education. After graduation, some chose to return to Silver Lining Ministry as interns, while others committed themselves to long-term service, carrying on the ministry’s mission of caring for and transforming lives.

On the second day, Lydia arranged a long but fulfilling itinerary for us. Although everyone was exhausted by the end of the day, the journey was filled with surprises, touching moments, and hope. As I reflected on the day’s activities, three groups of people came to mind: staff members who refuse to give up, parents who refuse to give up, and children who refuse to give up.

A Group of Silver Lining Ministry Staff Who Refuse to Give Up Silver Lining Ministry’s Rehabilitation Center is located on the second floor of a government-operated complex designed to serve people with disabilities on the western side of Nanning. That morning, our group of nineteen people—including a short-term mission team from Hong Kong—visited the center. As we entered the building, I noticed that the other organizations seemed relatively quiet and even somewhat deserted. However, when we stepped into Silver Lining Ministry’s Activity Center, the atmosphere was completely different. The center was bustling with people, filled with laughter and conversation. The entire space radiated energy and life. Through the staff’s introduction, we learned about the center’s philosophy and operations and toured its rehabilitation facilities. We discovered that more than three-quarters of the staff hold government-recognized professional rehabilitation qualifications. Later, we had the opportunity to participate in a handicraft class alongside the young people there, learning and interacting with them. During the class, I was deeply moved by the patience and compassion of the instructors. They tirelessly guided each student, hoping that handicraft training would help improve the motor coordination of those with cerebral palsy while equipping them with practical skills that could increase their ability to live independently in the future. Although not every staff member is a Christian, we could clearly see God working through their service, bringing love and care to this community of people living with cerebral palsy.

A Group of Parents Who Refuse to Give Up Silver Lining Ministry’s Rehabilitation Center is a nonprofit organization, and all services are provided free of charge to those receiving care. During our home visits, we learned that many families had already exhausted their life savings caring for their children with cerebral palsy. Just when they felt they had reached the end of their resources and had nowhere else to turn, God led them to Silver Lining Ministry. Some families had even left their hometowns and relocated entirely to Nanning so that their children could receive better rehabilitation training and have a more hopeful future. In most families, the burden of daily caregiving falls primarily on the mothers, while the fathers work hard to provide financial support. Yet throughout our conversations, we heard very few complaints and almost no expressions of despair. Instead, we witnessed families who had regained strength through Silver Lining Ministry’s companionship and support. Marriages had been restored, and the pressures of daily life had become more manageable. One mother shared that her greatest wish was for her child with cerebral palsy to one day marry and have a family of his own—and perhaps even give her the joy of holding a grandchild someday. At that moment, what we saw was more than a dream; it was a faith-filled hope for the future. That picture deeply moved all of us. May God continue to use Silver Lining Ministry’s work to bring the Gospel and hope to these parents who refuse to give up.

A Group of Children Who Refuse to Give Up While participating in the handicraft class, I asked a young man who was making a heart-shaped keychain, “How long does it take to complete this project?” He replied, “Three days.” His answer stunned me. A craft that most people could finish in about two hours required three days of effort for him. Some of these children may need ten, twenty, or even more years to progress from being completely dependent on others to living independently. They may have to learn to walk by first learning to crawl. They may spend years progressing from picking up a single bead to dressing themselves, putting on shoes, or even learning how to cook. Many things that we take for granted are, for them, long and difficult journeys. Yes, we could say that they have little choice if they hope to build a future for themselves. Yet we also know that they could choose to give up. But thanks be to God, they have not given up. In these children, we see more than physical limitations. We see remarkable perseverance and resilience. We see more than disability—we see God’s wonderful work and the manifestation of His glory.

Though our visit lasted only a single day, by the end everyone was physically and emotionally exhausted. Yet what we saw, heard, experienced, and touched left a lasting imprint on our hearts and became a part of our lives that we will never forget.
